Old and In Love

Updated: Mar 20

Im an audiologist and I work with people who have hearing and balance disorders. I love what I do because I get to help people reconnect with others using awesome technology and rehab strategies!

The other day I was working with a patient and I was setting him up with some new hearing aids. Now, after I set people to their prescription, I always like to chat for a bit to make sure everything sounds good during one on one conversations before they leave; so I asked him about his life.

I work with veterans so I was expecting him to tell me about his time in service, but he surprised me! This man went on to describe the perfect love story!

He had a daughter who grew up too fast. She met a boy that my patient did not approve of. He described this boy as someone with no future; long hair, no shoes, no job, and little determination. There was no way he was going to let his daughter end up with a guy like this.

One day everything changed. His daughter ended up getting pregnant and this boy was the dad. My patient mentioned more than once how he felt about that.. you could probably guess: anger, frustration, excitement, etc. However, regardless of how he felt, he was going to have a grand baby so he had to either jump on board or stay angry forever!

The week of the wedding came around and his daughter invited him to the wedding rehearsal; after all, she wanted him to walk her down the aisle and give her away. He was hesitant at first but he said when he saw his daughter all dressed up all the anger went away.. all he wanted was for her to be happy and loved; to live a good life and be looked after. He knew it was going to be all up to this boy he didn't approve of.

Little did he know that this boy had a change of heart as well. My patient said that shortly after this boy found out about the pregnancy he had a real heart to heart with God. This boy lived on a farm and one night he went out to his fields and kneeled down. The weight of fatherhood really hit him. Apparently he didn't leave his knees until he and God made a plan of how he could turn his life around. After that night, he shaped up, cut his hair, joined the military and became a sharp young man determined to make a positive change in the world. When he returned from service he went into the ministry and turned his life to God and became a pastor. My patient spoke really highly of him and said he is the only pastor he trusts. He is now a good father and husband with a good head on his shoulders.

The best part of my job is listening to life stories. They almost always surprise me! Anyways, there is a screen play in this one somewhere; a touching romance... maybe a good Hallmark for the holidays.
